The Mission

Conundrum Hot Springs sits at 11,200 feet at the head of a long alpine valley outside Aspen. This mission carries the whole group in together, camps together, and takes the whole group up Castle Peak and Conundrum Peak together the next day — off-trail, from the hot springs side — before everyone soaks it off and hikes out together Sunday. One roster, one line, start to finish.

One thing worth knowing going in: because this line goes off-trail above the hot springs, it's a bit more involved than a typical Class 2 walk-up — see the note below.

Good to Know — Two Different Routes Up These Peaks

The standard route up Castle Peak and Conundrum Peak (Class 2, well-traveled, cairned) starts from the Castle Creek Trailhead — a different trailhead, up a different road, 12.5 miles from the Aspen roundabout. It doesn't connect to Conundrum Hot Springs.

Reaching both peaks from the hot springs side — the way this trip does it, so the summit and the soak fit in one continuous weekend — is a somewhat different animal:

  • No maintained trail past the hot springs basin, and cairns are sparse to nonexistent
  • Looser rock underfoot than the standard route
  • Mostly Class 2, with a few short stretches that lean toward Class 3 depending on the exact line taken

None of this is unmanageable for a group with some scrambling experience and a bit of extra care on the loose sections — it just isn't quite the same as a standard cairned Class 2 trail, so it's worth going in with eyes open.

Worth Having

Some prior scrambling experience and comfort finding your own line off-trail will make this a much better day — good to gut-check with new members before they sign up.

Trip Lead

As always, the trip lead is watching weather and pace and will call the shot if conditions turn — same as any Charlie Mike mission above treeline.

Helmets Recommended

Given the loose rock, helmets are a smart call for everyone on summit day.

Weather Window

Afternoon storms build fast above treeline in the Elks, so it's smart to set a turnaround time before heading up and plan to stick to it.

Muster in Denver, gear check, roll out via I-70 W → Glenwood Springs → CO-82 to Aspen.

Arrive Conundrum Creek Trailhead. ~25-car lot, fills early — overflow on Castle Creek Rd. Never park on Conundrum Rd itself (tow risk, narrow county right-of-way over private land).

Bear canisters loaded, WAG bags distributed, boots on. Begin hike, full packs, whole group together.

Creek crossing #1 (mile 2.5, log bridge).

Creek crossings #2 and #3 back to back (miles 6 and 6.5) — the second is an unbridged wade, pack a camp shoe.

Pass the old cabin ruins (mile 8) — half a mile to go.

Leave the maintained trail near 12,000 ft. Off-trail route-finding begins toward the Castle–Conundrum saddle — stay spread out a bit on the loose sections so nobody's directly below someone else.
